What is “3 Souls & 7 Spirits”

人要死时七魄先散，然后三魂再离。
When a person dies, his/her 7 Spirits will first disperse away, follow by his/her 3 Souls.

生病时就是和魄散了，所以要用药物去阻止它散发。如果和魄和力魄散了就容易鬼上身。
When a person falls ill, that means his/her Spirits are dispersing away, hence medicine needs to be taken to prevent it dispersing. If Spirits (4th) are dispersed, person is vulnerable and easily possessed by ghosts.

人的精神分而可以称之为魂魄，其魂有三，一为天魂，二为地魂，三为命魂。其魄有七，一魄天冲，二魄灵慧，三魄为气，四魄为力，五魄中枢，六魄为精，七魄为英。
A person’s non-physical part consists Souls and Spirits. There are 3 Souls; one is called “Heavenly Soul”, the 2nd is “Earthly Soul” and the 3rd is “Life Soul”. There are 7 Spirits; first one is called “Heaven Breaker”, 2nd is “Spiritual Intelligence”, 3rd is “Energy”, 4th is “Strength”, 5th is “Centre”, 6th is “Vigor”, 7th is “Essense”.

魂为阳，魄为阴。其中三魂和七魄当中，又各另分阴阳。三魂之中。天魂为阳，地魂为阴，命魂又为阳。七魄中天冲灵慧二魄为阴为天魄，气魄力魄中枢魄为阳为人魄，精英二魄为阳为地魄。
Souls are Yang polarity, Spirits are Yin polarity, generally. Among the 3 Souls & 7 Spirits, they further divide into Yin and Yang polarity. “Heavenly Soul” is Yang, “Earthly Soul” is Yin, “Life Soul” is Yang. Among the spirits, “Heaven Breaker” and “Spiritual Intelligence” are Yin, grouped as Heaven Spirits. “Energy”, “Strength” and “Centre” are Yang, grouped as Human Spirits. “Vigor” and “Essense” are Yang, grouped as Earth Spirits.

三魂当中，天地二魂常在外，唯有命魂独住身。天地命三魂并不常相聚首。七魄中两个天魄两个地魄和三个人魄，阴阳相应，从不分开。并常附于人体之上。其实人类的七魄，实际上就是藏密所说的位于人体从头顶到胯下会阴穴的中脉之上的七个脉轮，七个能量场。其中天冲魄在顶轮，灵慧魄在眉心轮，气魄在喉轮，力魄在心轮上，并同时与双手心和双脚心相连。中枢魄在脐轮，精魄在生殖轮，英魄在海底轮。人体的七魄同由命魂所掌。命魂又称为人魂，或者色魂。人类生命就是从此命魂住胎而产生的。命魂住胎之后，将能量分布于人体中脉的七个脉轮之上。而形成人的七魄。魄为人的肉身所独有，人死之后，七魄随之消散，而命魂也自离去，生命即以此告终。
Among the 3 Souls, “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul” are external while “Life Soul” is residing inside the body. The 3 Souls often don’t interact with each other. For the 7 Spirits (2 Heaven Spirits, 3 Human Spirits and 2 Earth Spirits), they interact with each other, inseparable, residing in the human body. In fact, the 7 Spirits correspond to the 7 Chakras. “Heaven Breaker” is residing at Crown Chakra, “Spiritual Intelligence” at Brow Chakra (ie; Third Eye), “Energy” at Throat Chakra, “Strength” at Heart Chakra, connecting with palm and foot underside. “Centre” spirit resides at Navel Chakra, “Vigor” at Sacral Chakra and “Essence” at Root Chakra. The 7 Spirits are controlled by “Life Soul” which is also known as “Human Soul” or “Colour Soul”. A human’s life is created when “Life Soul” resides into the foetus. Once “Life Soul” resides into foetus, its energy is spread into the physical body’s 7 chakras, forming the 7 Spirits. Spirits reside in the physical human body. When a human dies, the 7 Spirits disperse away and “Life Soul” will also depart, thus life meets it end.

人的命魂，透过七魄中的天冲灵慧魄主思想，主智慧。透过气力二魄和中枢魄，主行动。通过精英二魄主身体主强健。唯中枢一魄，乃为七魄的中心。人的命魂就依附于七个脉轮之上。
A human’s “Life Soul”; through the “Heaven Breaker” and “Spiritual Intelligence”, governs a person’s intelligence and thinking; through “Energy”, “Strength” and “Centre” spirit, governs a person’s physical movements; through “Vigor” and “Essence”, governs a person’s health and body. “Centre” Spirit is the centre of the 7 Spirits. A human’s “Life Soul” is dependant on the 7 chakras.

人身中命魂与中枢魄的联系最为密切，所以中枢魄也称为命魄，在人体内部，天冲灵慧二天魄之阴，与精英二地魄之阳交，而产生人魄有形之气力。在人身外部，则是因天魂之阳，与地魂之阴交合，成命魂。并同时三魂相合，主人无形的命运。运是由人的天地二魂联合，主人命的好坏和强弱。命则是人的命魂，支持自身的天地二魂，运发的旺盛与兴衰。运由命所主，命由运所发。运无形而命有形，运与命复合，则构成人类完整的生命体。
A human’s “Life Soul” and “Centre” Spirit have close relationship, “Centre” Spirit is also known as “Life Spirit”. In the internal part of human body, “Heaven Breaker” and “Spiritual Intelligence” interacts with “Vigor” and “Essence”, thus forming Human Spirit’s energy force. In the external part of human body, “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul” interacts to form “Life Soul”. At the same time, the 3 Souls combine to form a person’s fate (destiny and luck). Luck is formed by combination of “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul”, governing the ups and downs of a person’s fate. Destiny is formed by “Life Soul” supporting “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul” and strong/weak prevailing luck. Luck is governed by Life, Life is activated by Luck, Life and Luck interacts, forming the complete human form.

运主虚空，命主实相。凡人命运的好坏，在于人的命与运是否生合或者相制约。若是运强过了命，不去生扶自己的命，并反而压制命，则人身七魄的天魄地魄人魄也必不相生。此人必表现为命薄和体弱。若得命强过运。而能使得运不得不去生扶自己的命。则人身七魄之天魄地魄人魄必得相生合。人就会表现得身强命旺，人的根基必深而厚，此等行者，修行才易于成功。
Luck governs emptiness, Life governs real trends. Whether a human’s luck is good or bad, depends on interaction of Life energy and Luck. If Luck is stronger than Life, without supporting own Life, instead suppressing Life, the 7 Spirits are also of non-productive cycle. A person hence will exhibit trends of a poor fate and weak body. If Life is stronger than Luck, thus forcing Luck to support Life, the 7 Spirits are of productive cycle. A person hence will exhibit trends of a strong fate and strong body. His/Her spiritual foundation are deep and strong, if devote to spiritual cultivation, then will see success. [“Life” in this paragraph is deduced to be referring to “Life Soul”.]

命魂乃七魄之根本，七魄乃命魂的枝叶。魄无命不生，命无魄不旺。命魂是人身的主魂。天地二魂的聚合产生命魂而生人，命魂终结时又分出阴阳。并回归天地。天魂主光，地魂则是天魂的光照射在人命魂之上所形成的影子。所以地魂又称为影魂。无光不成影，无影不成相。修行人若能修得命运融合，天光与地相才能与人的色魂相合。如此人体眉心的灵慧之魄，才能得以显现出天魂地魂的形象。如此人的天地二魂常在外而所见的一切相，才能得以在人的大脑和天眼里显示出来。因为天魂和地魂既能依附与肉身而显化万象，也能脱离肉身而自由存在，所以人的天魂和地魂也称为身外化身。
“Life Soul” is the root and foundation of the 7 Spirits, while the 7 Spirits are likened to the branches and leaves. Without “Life Soul”, the spirits cannot survive; without spirits, “Life Soul” cannot prospers. “Life Soul” is the main soul of human body. Heavenly and Earthly Souls form human life, when “Life Soul” ends it separates into Yin and Yang, returning to heaven and earth. “Heavenly Soul” is like light, while “Earthly Soul” is like a shadow casted by “Heavenly Soul” shining at “Life Soul”. Hence “Earthly Soul” is also known as “Shadow Soul”. Without light, there is no shadow, without shadow, there is no form (trend). People who devote in spiritual cultivation if can achieve Life and Luck combining in harmony, “Heaven Light” and “Earth Soul” can then combine with Life Soul. Therefore, “Spiritual Intelligence” will then be able to show the image of “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul”. Which in turn, what a person’s “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul” see externally, will then be able to be shown in his/her brain and “Third Eye”. Because “Heavenly Soul” and “Earthly Soul” can possess in physical body and can also survive on their own outside the physical body, they are also called “external incarnations” of a person.

古人论述
古人认为人身上有三魂七魄，也有说三魂六魄的，三魂又叫三精。这种说法来源于道家，如道书《云笈七签》云：“夫人有三魂，一名胎光，一名爽灵，一名幽精。”七魄是：尸狗、伏矢、雀阴、吞贼、非毒、除秽、臭肺，皆“身中之浊鬼也”。
